ESA Cryosphere training course 2018

Space track student Stefan Linge participated in the 2nd ESA advanced training course on remote sensing of the cryosphere. June 11-16 2018 at UNIS at Svalbard as an extracurricular activity.

First Day

ESA Cryosphere training course 2018

On our first day (11.06.18), we visited SvalSat not far away from the town Longyearbyen.

At SvalSat, we were doing our lightning talks and I presented our Cold Climate Engineering programme.

We went on a boat trip to Sassenfjorden (14.06.18). Fortunately, the fjord was ice-free and we could get close to the glacier to see ice calving with the naked eye.

Lectures

ESA Cryosphere training course 2018

The lectures were very interesting and we have been through some useful hands-on sessions. I have to say that the two semesters at Aalto University gave me a substantial preparation for the training course. Moreover, I could improve my knowledge of altimetry and gravimetry.

ESA Cryosphere training course 2018

The last day we went on a trip to the Larsbreen glacier behind Nybyen (16.06.18). The stunning environment and the exploration of an ice cave was the reward for a tough pathway. The excursions helped me in understanding the formation of glaciers and their environmental interaction.

I met a lot of remote sensing people: A few Master students, many Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers (also from DTU). I'm looking forward to seeing those fellows again at another remote sensing gathering.
