MAC 2018

The Model Arctic Council (MAC) 2018 was held at the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi Finland from 28 October to 2 November, 2018.  The purpose of the event was to simulate a negotiation situation on fundamental issues relevant to the Arctic. The MAC gave students and young professionals the opportunity to step into virtual realities by role playing one of the positions present in the Arctic Council. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the simulation fused science, politics, and economics to tackle a very prominent real-world problem in the Arctic today: “Oil and Gas Drilling in Arctic Seas versus Environmental Protection.” . Ultimately, a multidimensional declaration was signed which encouraged sustainable best management practices during drilling operations, and aimed to protect marine ecosystems and the livelihood of the affected indigenous societies.
