General Admission Requirements

You must indicate in your application which study track you wish to follow and submit a draft study plan.

The common admission requirements are divided into three categories:

  • Degree requirements
  • Academic prerequisites
  • Language requirements

Admission Procedure

There is joint admission for the Nordic Master in Cold Climate Engineering. This means that all applications must be submitted through the DTU online application portal.

Motivation letter

All applicants must write a motivation letter with  a resume attached as part of the application. For the Land and Sea tracks the motivation letter must include a passage describing your expectations to spending one or more semesters in Greenland or Svalbard.

Degree Requirements

Students applying for the Nordic Master in Cold Climate Engineering must have obtained a Bachelor's (BSc) Degree corresponding to a minimum 180 ECTS credits.

Applicants with a Polytechnic (FI), Högskoleingeniör (SE) and Diplomingeniør (DK) degree may be considered and may be expected to do extra course work to qualify for the programme.

Students in their final year of their bachelor’s studies are eligible to apply, provided they complete their BSc by the start of the program.

English language requirements


  • Paper-based: 580 (written section grade 4.5)
  • Internet-based test: 92 (written section grade 22) 


  • 6.5, no section lower than 5.5 (only IELTS Academic Training accepted).

The language test must not be older than two years.

English language test exemptions:

  • 1. Applicants who have citizenship or have completed a university degree instructed in English at a university that is physically located in one of the following countries:
    - USA
    - Canada (except Quebec)
    - UK
    - Ireland
    - Australia
    - New Zealand 
  • 2. Applicants who have completed at least a 3-year degree instructed in English in an EU/EEA country.

For Nordic citizens only:
Documentation from upper seconday school/high school that the English level is comparable with the English B - level in Denmark (see Skema til omreging af fagniveauer for nordiske eksaminer, see here), and include the school leaving certificate of your upper secondary education in your application package).
